Rotterdam – City on the River Maas
Rotterdam is an international port city in the province of South Holland, situated on the Nieuwe Maas in the heart of the Rhine-Meuse delta.
The city is known worldwide for its port. The Port of Rotterdam is one of Europe's most important logistical gateways and has connected The Netherlands with the rest of the world for generations.
That international character is a perfect match for amateur radio.
While ships leave Rotterdam for destinations around the globe, radio signals from my QTH in Rotterdam-Ommoord travel through the air towards stations around the world.
With one important difference:
Radio waves don't need a harbour to reach the world.
A City with History
The name Rotterdam dates back to the thirteenth century and refers to a dam constructed in the River Rotte.
During the Second World War, a large part of Rotterdam's historic city centre was destroyed in the bombing of 14 May 1940.
After the war, Rotterdam chose reconstruction, innovation and modern architecture. As a result, the city developed a unique identity and became internationally known for its bold and innovative architectural style.
Today, historic landmarks, modern skyscrapers, the River Maas and the port together form the distinctive character of Rotterdam.
QTH Rotterdam-Ommoord
My QTH is located in Ommoord, in the northeastern part of Rotterdam.
Operating an amateur radio station from an urban environment presents both interesting challenges and opportunities for radio communication.
The station is equipped with various radio systems and antennas and can also be operated remotely. This allows me to use and control the Rotterdam station even when I am not physically present at the QTH.
Antennas can be selected electronically, while radio equipment can be remotely controlled and monitored.
In this way, PD2JKC remains connected to the world from Rotterdam-Ommoord.
From Rotterdam to the World
Rotterdam has always been connected to the rest of the world.
Through the River Maas.
Through its port.
Through international trade and shipping.
And from my QTH, through amateur radio.
When propagation conditions are favourable, a radio signal from Rotterdam-Ommoord can travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres.
Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia, Oceania every opening of the bands can bring another part of the world within reach.
That is the magic of amateur radio for me:
One station. One antenna. One radio signal. The world within reach.
