Rotterdam is an important port city located in the west of the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland with 672.000 inhabitants (20234, Ommoord 26.065 (2024) and has an area of 319.35 square kilometers of which 206.44 land and 112.91 water, both in square kilometers. The city is located on the Nieuwe Maas, one of the rivers in the delta formed by the Rhine and the Maas. The port of Rotterdam, for a long time the largest in the world, is the largest and most important in Europe. The port area extends over a length of 40 kilometers.

The name Rotterdam dates from the thirteenth century and refers to a dam in the river Rotte. The historic city center was largely destroyed by a bombing in May 1940. Rotterdam is known for its innovative architecture.
